Hello! My name is John G. Moore. I was born in 1826 and there really is not a lot written in history about me, unlike my friend Captain Terrell. In the 1870’s my good friend C.C Nash and I heard the Texas Pacific railroad was coming to Terrell. We had a vision that Terrell could be so much more than just a farm community. We had dreams of economic opportunities and a commerce hub if you will. We put our sources and land together in a partnership with Nash being the “money” guy. He put $1,600 into that endeavor. Let’s just say I was a sweat equity partner because I had to stuff that money down in my pants! Back then, you couldn’t just openly carry money down the countryside.
I hopped on my horse and rode all the way to Uvalde, Texas, to find the best surveyors that we could find. We came back here, surveyed, and planted over 320 acres. Now, he then deeded a big chunk of that back to the Texas Pacific railroad with the caveat that they would build a nice train depot, which they did!
Folks, from there, in such a short period of time, Terrell became a great place of commerce where families from all over would come to trade their money and buy goods. No more were we just a farm community! We were becoming something that would be a blessing for many families for generations to come.
I am so proud. Not only is there a road named after me that you drive down through Terrell daily, but also, my sweet daughter, Virginia has a street named after her as well. Also, my nieces, Adelaide and Frances have streets named after them also. We can’t forget the great C.C. Nash with his street name as well!
Thank you for letting me share my story!
